The Hatchet - Tic Tac Toe Activities

  •  Create a guide book that will allow you to identify plants and animals in your local ecosystem. Be sure to post pictures where possible.
  •  Write a letter home to Brian's parents, as if you were Brian. What would you say to your parents?
  •  Keep a week long diary or journal, posting your thoughts as you read through the chapters. Would your thoughts be positive or negative?  What would be your motivation for staying alive?
  •  Write a descriptive paragraph of what your first thoughts and feelings would be once you realized you were all alone.
  •  Build a first-aid and survival kit. Ensure that you have everything needed to survive in the wilderness alone. Post the list of items in your kit and provided a picture for our online readers.
  •  Brian is rescued because of an emergency beacon.  Provide information on how people are rescued by emergency beacons and how are emergency signals used.
  •  Build a model of what Brian's shelter would have been like. Write step-by tep instructions of how to build a proper and durable shelt. Post a picture of your shelter.
  •  Choose one animal that you may encounter when in the woods (e.g. moose, porcupine, turtle, etc.). Create a fact sheet on important information that you would need to know if you came across one in the wild.
  •  Go through the book and find examples of what Paulsen uses different forms of figurative language (e.g. repetition, onomatopeia, alliteration, etc.). Which form is most commonly used thruoghout the book? Be sure to define each type of figurative langauge and providing an example from the text.
